Greetings,
Hello, and welcome to the Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School/Savannah Law School Dean Search Committee pages. These are interesting and challenging times for the entire enterprise of post-secondary education in America. Not just for law schools, but for all kinds of schools. Change is in the air, and no one has a crystal ball to forecast its direction. What is for certain is that the need for educated people in society isn’t going away anytime soon. Pity us all if it does. Is college worth it? Graduate school in most subjects? Law school? Where are the jobs? What about that trillion dollars in outstanding student debt? Are MOOCs and online courses the answer? What about academic credit for life experience… and on and on. Our major media outlets provide an almost daily diet of articles and stories related to these issues. America’s changing demographics is also a factor. The ‘baby bust’ generation’s offspring are ready for college. The population trend is South and West, away from the smokestack cities of the upper Midwest and Northeast that have been, and are, home to some of our greatest universities.
Of course, our main interest here is focused on the enterprise of legal education, and our two law schools in particular. As you read the specifics of our dean search on the next page we invite you to contemplate the needs of the Law, a long established and learned profession, with the demands placed upon it by the demands of today’s cultural, social, and economic conditions. We look forward to hearing from you with your application or expression of further interest in the decanal position available, or just simply your thoughts on the issues we raise.
